I
am recording on an ADAT based hard disk recorder in a 24Bit 48Khz format. This
machine I choose for the excellent sound quality of the AD-DA converters. Recording
through class-A tube pre-amp's and/or Valley People limiters will add analogue
warmth and dynamic control already in the recording phase. There's a various
choice of well known microphones available, such as Shure sm-47, 57, 58 and
91(piazzo) Neumann TLM-103 and KM-184, Audio Technics AT4033A and ATM-11, Beyer
Dynamic M-201TG and TGX-50, AKG D-112 and C-451E, Senheiser 421-U-4. I work
with a 32 Channel in-line mixing console manufactured by Allen&Heath known for
it's excellent mic pre-amp's and warm EQ. There is one separate recording room
of about 25mē and a few transistor and valve bass and guitar amp's available
as well as two-speaker cabinet's both equipped with 4x25 watt Celestion's and
a D.I. box. After the recordings I swap (if wishful) all 24 track's digitally
to a computer to work thing further out on a Steinberg's Nuendo platform providing
full control over all tracks. I am therefore totally compatible with Steinberg's
Cubase and it is possible to work with Mac-based Logic files. Further on it
means that MIDI is involved and OMF in and export can be realized to work on
audio post-productions and ensure full synchronization with film and video material.
Although the actual audio material is digitized I choose to mix in an analogue
way over the Allen&Heath console when mixing down a band. I will only stay in
the digital domain when editing or mixing for postproductions or for surround
purposes. During the mix we can use a T-Comp Mind-Print tube compressor (adding
warmth and richness to for instance the bass and drum subb group), a broadcast
quality SPL Stereo enhancer/exciter, Presonus high-end clean compressor's and
a high quality Impulse Response Reverb providing us with any real room or hall
available as well as the well known Lexicon 480. The (pre-master) mix will be
made in a 24Bit 96Khz format and can therefore be mastered elsewhere starting
of from this high quality standard.
